What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a Complementary Therapy that works on the feet or hands enabling the body to heal itself. Following illness, stress, injury or disease, the body can be in a state of "imbalance", and vital energy pathways may be blocked, preventing them from functioning effectively. Reflexology can be used to restore and maintain the body's natural equilibrium and encourage natural healing.

Reflexology is based on the principle that the anatomy of the body is reflected or mirrored in minature on the feet and hands. It is a simple non-invasive treatment which helps maintain a delicate balance within the body's systems and structures. By using specific pressures and techniques healing is both initiated and accelerated in the corresponding area of the body. A Reflexologist uses hands only to apply pressure to the feet.

For each person the application and the effect of the therapy is unique. Sensitive, trained hands can detect any tiny deposits and imbalances in the feet, and by working on these points the Reflexologist can release blockages and restore the free flow of energy to the whole body. Tensions are eased, and circulation and elimination is improved. This gentle therapy encourages the body to heal itself, often counteracting a lifetime of misuse.

Who can benefit from Reflexology?

Reflexology can be used to restore and maintain the body's natural equilibrium. This non-invasive therapy encourages the body to work naturally to maintain its own healthy balance. Reflexology has been shown to be effective for many conditions including: back pain, migraines, infertility, sleep disorders, hormonal imbalances, sports injuries, arthritis, digestive disorders and stress related conditions. Reflexology is an excellent stress buster!

What happens during a treatment?

On the first visit, the Reflexology practitioner will have a preliminary talk with you to determine your present and past health and lifestyle. The Reflexologist will then use the hands to apply pressure to your feet. The application and the effect of the therapy is unique to each person. A professionally trained Reflexologist can detect subtle changes in specific points on the feet, and by working on these points, can affect the corresponding organ or system of the body. A treatment session usually lasts for about 45 minutes. A course of treatment may be recommended depending on your body's needs.

What happens after a treatment?

After one or two treatments your body may respond in a very definite way. Most people note a sense of well-being and relaxation; sometimes people report feeling lethargic but this is transitory and is a part of the healing process.

Stress
With approximately 75% of all illnesses said to be linked to stress, it's not surprising to see the growing popularity of reflexology as a means of feeling healthy through stress relief. Stress can drain the immune system, leading to a greater susceptibility to colds and flu and can also cause tension which can result in neck and shoulder stiffness and headaches.
