What is Homeopathy?
Homeopathy is a complete system of treatment which aids the body's own ability to heal itself. It will assist your body's own resources to fight off illnesses. It can be used for adults, children and babies who would normally be treated with drugs, e.g. antibiotics, antihistamines, anti-inflammatories, bronchodilators and steroid creams to name but a few.
Because it stimulates the body to heal itself, homeopathy can also effectively treat people who are suffering from viral illnesses such as influenze, coughs and colds, which cannot be helped by antibiotics.
How does Homeopathy work?
Homeopathy works by what is called 'the law of similars', developed by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann. The law explains that a substance which gives a healthy person symptoms of illness, can also cure symptoms in a sick person.
For instance, when cutting a strong onion, we often experience the symptoms of stinging, watery eyes and a runny nose. Some people have these symptoms in hay fever and so a homeopath may prescribe the remedy Allium Cepa (onion), to relieve them.
What will treatment be like?
A homeopath will not need to make a physical examination, but will need to ask you how your symptoms affect you, mentally, emotionally and physically.
Personality traits are taken into account when deciding the remedy; some people are shy and retiring, whilst others are outgoing and lively. It is helpful to know how you react to certain situations and how you express your feelings, in order to build up a picture of you as a whole person. This information helps the homeopath to select the right remedy for you.
What are the remedies?
Remedies are made from plants and minerals. Because they are carefully diluted to give different strengths (or potencies), those substances which would normally be poisonous, e.g. Belladonna or Arsenicum, are made harmless and have no side effects.
The remedy is usually given in small tablet form, and allowed to dissolve in the mouth. For treating babies, they can be crushed into powder. No food or drink, toothpaste or cigarettes should be taken for fifteen minutes before or after taking the remedy.
Storage should be in a cool, dark place away from odours.
What will happen after I take a remedy?
You may notice some changes; some people see an immediate improvement in energy, whilst others experience a cold, or other detoxifying symptoms such as a rash or diarrhoea. Old symptoms may also reappear.
All these symptoms are short lived and should not be treated, as they are part of the healing process. It would be useful to note any changes, to discuss with your homeopath. If you have any concerns during treatment, your homeopath will be happy to talk to you.
How long will treatment take?
If your illness is one that you have had for some time, it may take several appointments before the symptoms are completely clear. If your symptoms are quite recent, you may have to see the homeopath only once or twice before they are better.
Homeopathy does not treat symptoms by suppressing them, but by treating the cause, and assisting the body to heal itself.
This results in a healthier individual, more able to combat other illnesses which may occur.
